TSY® - Trauma Sensitive Yoga
Trauma Sensitive Yoga - TSY® - is a body-oriented therapeutic method that can accompany trauma therapy. It uses the postures (asanas) and breath control (pranayama) from yoga to support mindful awareness of physical sensations. In doing so, it can be possible to observe emotional and physical reactions without being swamped and overwhelmed by them.
Trauma Sensitive Yoga can assist in the treatment of trauma effects, providing stabilization, affect and self-regulation, and helping you regain safety and control over yourself and your body. The gentle, body-oriented approach is especially useful if you feel easily overwhelmed by your emotions or tend to dissociate. The TSY® approach offers you a gentle introduction to improving your affect regulation and opens up concrete coping tools for your everyday life.
For people who have experienced trauma, it can be a great challenge to recognize their own body, as overwhelming memories can trigger uncontrollable bodily responses. This can be so frightening that you want to separate yourself from your own bodily experience. In such cases, the affected person may experience a feeling of numbness or non-existence of body parts, entire body regions or the entire body. It is therefore recommended to approach bodily sensations in a gentle way.
What can you expect in a trauma-sensitive yoga class?
In a group or individual setting, you will receive exercise sequences tailored to you or the group, which can help you to better understand and influence your body and its needs and sensitivities, in order to gain more control and the ability to act with regard to yourself and your body. We flow consciously and safely through various asanas (yoga postures). These can be complemented by pranayama (breathing exercises).
What you can't expect in Trauma Sensitive Yoga?
TSY® is not another form of conversational or group therapy. There will be no discussion of crisis/traumatic experiences, rounds of feedback and sensitivities, or physical exertion. TSY® as a body-oriented method can support trauma healing and help you in your personal healing process. It does not replace conventional talk therapy.
Group and individual sessions are available upon request. The class can take place online, in presence or in a room of your choice. Please contact me to participate in a Trauma Sensitive Yoga class.
